Resumo

We investigate the summing of individual γ ray energies in a large modularized NaI detector. A formalism is described to generate the total energy spectrum from the line shapes of the participating transitions, and the response of the detector to complex γ cascades is studied. Illustrative examples measured in a twofold sum spectrometer show the single cascade spectrum from the decay of a high spin isomer as well as spectra corresponding to the mix of cascades following compound nucleus reactions and multiple Coulomb excitation.
