He is the author of Hot Spots: American Foreign Policy in a Post-Human Rights World. He has served as a Senior Advisor to the White House and as President of the American Sociological Association, and has also taught at Columbia University, Harvard University, and University of California-Berkeley. He was listed as one of the top 100 American intellectuals in Richard Posner's book Public Intellectuals.
