ResumoGene expression occurs through a complex mRNA-protein (mRNP) system that stretches from transcription to translation. Gene expression processes are increasingly studied from global perspectives in order to understand their pathways, properties, and behaviors as a system. Here we review these beginnings of mRNP systems biology, as they have emerged from recent large-scale investigation of mRNP components, interactions, and dynamics. Such work has begun to lay the foundation for a broader, integrated view of mRNP organization in gene expression.
