In addition to contributed and invited papers, the Proceedings boasts a substantial number of poster session reports covering a similar range of topics.Although the coverage is at times superficial and the prose occasionally spotty, I am generally impressed by the scope and content of the contributed and poster papers.The Proceedings concludes with a report of a panel discussion on the future of ultrasonics chaired by L. Bjorno.In this forum, five panelists gave their view of the future trends (5 years) in the following areas: ( 1 ) optics in ultrasound (B.Clushaw); (2) medical ultrasonics (P.N. T. Wells); (3) inverse methods in ultrasonics (P.C. Pedersen); (4) ultrasonic NDT (R. E. Green); (5) underwater ultrasonics (L.Bjorno).In these Proceedings I encounter a surprising number of articles of relevance to my work and that of my colleagues.I recommend this volume to any person or group that seeks to be brought up to date on the broad spectrum of activity in physical acoustics.
