Resumo

Levodopa and dopamine agonists cause widespread stimulation of dopamine systems inside and outside the brain. The therapeutic effect of levodopa in parkinsonism is thus accompanied by cardiovascular, gastrointestinal, hormonal, respiratory, and mental problems. It has not as yet proved possible to separate the nigrostriatal from other central effects of dopamine, although peripheral effects of levodopa have been limited in two different ways.
