Resumo

Abstract Acrylamide, styrene, and mixtures of acrylamide and styrene were grafted onto cellulose acetate film. The permeabilities of sodium chloride and sodium sulfate through the ungrafted and grafted cellulose acetate films were studied. Permeability increases with the increase in the extent of grafting of acrylamide; whereas it decreases with the increase in the extent of grafting of styrene onto cellulose acetate. The same trend in permeability was observed when cellulose acetate was grafted with the binary monomer mixture. Permeability is also found to depend on the nature of the solute dissolved in water. The results were discussed in terms of free volume concept of the water‐swollen films.
