ResumoAmong the papers of that doyen of East African coastal history was this paper on bull-baiting on the island of Pemba which is, we think, the most complete account of the practice yet written. We have retained Sir John's accounts of such activities in Ancient Crete and Greece, but the reader should be warned against jumping to conclusions about connections between these and African practices which in some respects resemble them. It seems probable that the paper was written in the 1950s, some ten years before the author's death.
