ResumoA bstract Specimens of commercial casting slip were cast in plaster molds, porous bisque molds, and porous bisque molds treated with calcium and aluminum chloride. A qualitative determination of the ion serving in the exchange position is possible by the evaluation of the yield value of the cast specimen. The results on a series of tests indicate that casting clayware may be carried out by one of two processes, namely, mechanical water removal by the porous mold or by an exchange reaction between the ions of the slip and those of the mold; combinations of both processes may also occur. A detailed description of both methods, including practical applications, is given.
