Summary The brown hyena clan under study utilizes one major den in which all cubs except the newborn are raised together. All females, including those without cubs, participate in raising the young by bringing food to the den. Females suckle cubs 10 months of age and possibly older and also suckle cubs other than their own. Social greeting, grooming, play, and other interactions are exhibited at the den between sibling and non‐sibling cubs, and between cubs, subadults, and adults. The advantages of communal denning in brown hyenas are discussed. Résumé Le clan d'hyènes brunes étudié utilise une tanière principale dans laquelle tous les jeunes sont élevés ensemble sauf les nouveaux‐nés. Toutes les femelles, y compris celles sans jeunes, participent à l'élevage des jeunes en apportant de la nourriture à la tanière. Les femelles allaitent les jeunes jusqu'à dix mois et peut‐être plus; elles allaitent aussi d'autres jeunes que les leurs. Les salutations sociales, la toilette, le jeu et d'autres interactions sont exécutées à la tanière entre des jeunes apparentés ou non, et entre jeunes, subadultes et adultes. Les avantages d'une tanière communautaire chez l'hybne brune sont discutés.
