ResumoA recent study has questioned whether popular singing in the vernacular was as central to evangelical liturgy in early Reformation Strasbourg as has long been supposed. This study re-examines the question, through a detailed examination of the principles and practice of liturgical music reported and advocated by the Strasbourg reformer, Martin Bucer. It traces, principally through his liturgical writings and biblical commentaries, both for Strasbourg and for other German centres, the evolution of Bucer's understanding, concluding that across his career he moves from Biblicism back toward the Catholic tradition, in a liturgical irenicism.
