Obesity has reached crisis proportions in industrialized societies [1Mitchell N.S. Catenacci V.A. Wyatt H.R. Hill J.O. Obesity: overview of an epidemic.Psychiatr. Clin. North Am. 2011; 34: 717-732Abstract Full Text Full Text PDF PubMed Scopus (292) Google Scholar]. Many factors converge to yield increased body mass index (BMI). Among these is sleep duration [2Bjorvatn B. Sagen I.M. Øyane N. Waage S. Fetveit A. Pallesen S. Ursin R. The circadian clock controls sleep timing through the process of entrainment. Chronotype describes individual differences in sleep timing, and it is determined by genetic background, age, sex, and environment (e.g., light exposure) [11Roenneberg T. Kuehnle T. Juda M. Kantermann T. Allebrandt K. Gordijn M. Merrow M. Epidemiology of the human circadian clock.Sleep Med. Entrainment of the human circadian clock.Cold Spring. Harb. Symp. Quant. Biol. 2007; 72: 293-299Crossref PubMed Scopus (181) Google Scholar]. Social jetlag quantifies the discrepancy that often arises between circadian and social clocks, which results in chronic sleep loss [11Roenneberg T. Kuehnle T. Juda M. Kantermann T. Allebrandt K. Gordijn M. Merrow M. Epidemiology of the human circadian clock.Sleep Med. Rev. 2007; 11: 429-438Abstract Full Text Full Text PDF PubMed Scopus (929) Google Scholar, 15Wittmann M. Dinich J. Merrow M. Roenneberg T. Social jetlag: misalignment of biological and social time.Chronobiol. Int. 2006; 23: 497-509Crossref PubMed Scopus (1444) Google Scholar]. The circadian clock also regulates energy homeostasis [16Marcheva B. Ramsey K.M. Buhr E.D. Kobayashi Y. Su H. Ko C.H. Ivanova G. Omura C. Mo S. Vitaterna M.H. et al.Disruption of the clock components CLOCK and BMAL1 leads to hypoinsulinaemia and diabetes.Nature. 2010; 466: 627-631Crossref PubMed Scopus (1076) Google Scholar], and its disruption—as with social jetlag—may contribute to weight-related pathologies [17Bass J. Takahashi J.S. Circadian integration of metabolism and energetics.Science. 2010; 330: 1349-1354Crossref PubMed Scopus (1275) Google Scholar, 18Green C.B. Takahashi J.S. Bass J. The meter of metabolism.Cell. 2008; 134: 728-742Abstract Full Text Full Text PDF PubMed Scopus (709) Google Scholar, 19Scheer F.A.J.L. Hilton M.F. Mantzoros C.S. Shea S.A. Adverse metabolic and cardiovascular consequences of circadian misalignment.Proc. Natl. Acad. Sci. USA. 2009; 106: 4453-4458Crossref PubMed Scopus (1484) Google Scholar]. Here, we report the results from a large-scale epidemiological study, showing that, beyond sleep duration, social jetlag is associated with increased BMI. Our results demonstrate that living “against the clock” may be a factor contributing to the epidemic of obesity. This is of key importance in pending discussions on the implementation of Daylight Saving Time and on work or school times, which all contribute to the amount of social jetlag accrued by an individual. Our data suggest that improving the correspondence between biological and social clocks will contribute to the management of obesity.Video AbstracteyJraWQiOiI4ZjUxYWNhY2IzYjhiNjNlNzFlYmIzYWFmYTU5NmZmYyIsImFsZyI6IlJTMjU2In0.eyJzdWIiOiJiNjQ5ZTQzNDdkMjI2NWU1NmRhNTA2NmI2MzZiYjk5OSIsImtpZCI6IjhmNTFhY2FjYjNiOGI2M2U3MWViYjNhYWZhNTk2ZmZjIiwiZXhwIjoxNjc4NDk5NTQzfQ.Zl3WtH7e7OqxmYaug1fsBBKV7YBiMBynHUhi9YhytsVUZGuQmR_2MgV0nO4yiYnVCnSb4g0Zm3uo9HQn2ud0SMilaAAQUDgyeT167uBa-1ocmcFtA2TDZfRZgbhyhf3t3kD6kVLkasDwCjg2agZH2eI67dx8BWTrV64ZTrEv848QqjnZb_m4fIpwC9XwN9neNxfWvMXuZzNohrX8OsmXJUnss9CFZvfiUrItoEJHb9gyp241E_YJYWGTwzS6LDyuTiAa7H6uP-9L83t2sWhVmBrwRDppgz0yH7nRXO4pMiO0XHTX4oKlj2ZyHOPr3MB8Dytq8SWFXzS-ZMkF7JqJ0w(mp4, (110.53 MB) Download video
