ResumoThis chapter is written in recognition of the many contributions to electronic structure theory by my long-time friend and colleague Frank E. Harris. In December 2014, Frank's many contributions, in particular, to the mathematical aspects of chemical physics were celebrated at a conference in Playa del Carmen, Mexico. The developments discussed here have mathematical aspects close to Frank's interests. Some terms in the nonrelativistic Hamiltonian for electronic systems have their origin in relativistic theory. The derivation of such terms has a long history and this chapter adds nothing new, but tries to highlight some of the important published early approaches to this problem.
