ResumoAbstract The death of Sir Basil Liddell Hart in February has been lamented by all those who knew of his immense contribution to the strategic thought of the twentieth century. Less publicised was his unlimited kindness and assistance to young students and junior officers, frequently to the detriment of his own work of the moment. An example of this occurred when he asked that the following thoughts on his primary strategic concept, the theory of the indirect approach, be brought to his Medmenham house, where subsequently on a long summer evening, they were discussed in great detail before he finally requested that he be allowed to retain a copy with his own comments added.
