ResumoAs tumors and cysts of the adrenals are comparatively rare and, as far as I know, have never been diagnosed before in vivo by means of x-ray examination, a case of this kind will probably be of some interest. Rolleston found adrenal metastases in 15 of 144 cases of malignant tumors elsewhere in the body. Le Dentu found metastases to the adrenals in 10 of 36 cases of carcinomatosis. Amongst the many autopsies I have attended I have seen only one case of a malignant tumor of the adrenals, a sarcoma of one gland. This patient died with sarcomatosis of the spinal cord; the adrenal sarcoma was taken to be the primary tumor.* Primary adrenal tumors were previously taken to be extremely rare. In 1895, Williams stated that in 13,824 cases, of tumors observed in the hospitals of London there was only one instance of a tumor of the adrenal (adenosarcoma). In 1898, however, Robert was able to gather 30 cases of adrenal tumors and 6 years later Hartman and Lecene reported 22 cases. Gradually, with the increasing interest in the endocrine glands, such instances have been reported in increasing numbers. Yet it is still a rare disease.
