Resumo

Though many surgeons listen to music in theatre, there can be few musicians who have repaid the compliment by incorporating elements of surgery directly into their music. Electronica duo Matmos (based in Baltimore, Maryland and perhaps best known for their work on a couple of Bjork's albums) are an exception: the instrumental credits on A Chance to Cut is a Chance to Cure (Matador, 2001) include surgery samples, lasers, straw and water (to supplement the liposuction sounds, naturally), a human skull and a goat spine. Apart from the record's conceptual wit and experimental brio, A Chance to Cut is informed by the fact that both members of Matmos, Drew Daniel and Martin Schmidt, have parents who are surgeons. I spoke to Drew about the record.
