ResumoAbstract A quantitative study of cyclic fixed bed processes has been applied to binary and ternary ion exchange systems of general forms of isotherms. Mathematical models for simulating the cyclic operation are developed. Experimental results obtained from binary sodium‐calcium and ternary synthetic sea water systems are compared with the calculated results. In general, the agreement is very satisfactory. A significant aspect of this study is that all transport and equilibrium properties used in the column dynamics calculations are determined from independent estimates or measurements, without the use of column data. The good agreement between the experimental and calculated results indicates that a suitable mathematical model can be very useful for the engineering design and application of cyclic fixed bed processes.
