ResumoThe polymerization of complexes formed by di(2-ethylhexyl) phosphoric acid (HDEHP) with Cu(II), Cd(II), Zn(II) and Co(II) (general composition M(DEHP)2) in organic diluents was studied by measuring the distribution of the complexes between ethylene glycol and dodecane or benzene. The ability of the polymerized complexes to react with free HDEHP was studied by viscosity measurements. According to their polymerization behaviour the complexes can be divided into 2 groups: (1) the Cu(II) and Cd(II) complexes do not tend to form indefinitely large polymeric species and are not depolymerized by ethylene glycol; (2) the Zn(II) and Co(II) complexes tend to form very large polymeric species in dodecane and benzene, which are strongly depolymerized by ethylene glycol and free HDEHP.
