ResumoA basic design of a multipurpose plant to produce acetic anhydride and sorbic acid from ketene is presented. The ketene is obtained from catalytic dehydratation of acetic acid on foam monoliths functionalized with silica. This technology is emerging as an alternative to the traditional pyrolysis of acetic acid because it does not involves high energy consumption and dangerous reactants. The plant capacity was estimated from the analysis of the Colombian consumer market ketene and its industrial value chain.
