Resumo

The article presents the results of research on corporate social performance (CSP). In the context of chief executive officers (CEOs) planning retirement, who tend to exhibit a bias in favor of short-term investments, CSP's status as a long term investment can cause it to be given short shrift. An overview of the study's protocol, which surveyed hundreds of U.S. firms from 1993 through 2005, is provided. It was found that CEO retirement had a significant and negative impact on CSP, which was mitigated in cases where the retiring CEO was retained as a member of the board of directors.
