Resumo

Datura discolor is commonly found in the Colorado desert of Southern California and in parts of Mexico. It is described in several keys to flora of this area, but has never been examined pharmacognostically. The historical background, distribution, and growth habits of this plant are discussed. A taxo-nomic description is included and covers additional features not presented in previous reports. The principal microscopic characteristics are described and compared with other Datura species of this area. Alkaloidal content and composition of a number of samples are reported. Total alkaloids approximate those of the official Datura stramonium, but the mixture contains a much greater proportion of scopolamine.
