Resumo

The transient receptor potential (TRP) ion channels are encoded by ∼30 distinct genes in mammals. TRP channels may be generally described as cation channels that increase intracellular Ca2+ levels. They are activated by diverse stimuli such as changes in temperature, pH, and osmolarity, and are modulated by growth factor and G-protein-coupled receptor pathways. TRPs thus integrate multiple concomitant stimuli as cellular sensors. They are grouped into six subfamilies, named C, V, M, A, P, and ML, on the basis of amino acid sequence homology: canonical, vanilloid, melastatin, ankyrin repeat, polycystins, and mucolipins, respectively.
