zeli; Third member: McCurdy. They were elected unanimously. Hesse wired his willingness to serve another two-year term as Editor of the Bulletin. He was elected to this office for 1953-1954. There was no financial report. The topic for this year's discussion was "Motifs." It may be said from the outset that, in the opinion of many, this was the most fruitful discussion we have had so far. It was decided to continue the topic at the 1953 meeting in Chicago. Wade opened the discussion and reported that his attempt to apply Thompson's MotifIndex lead into such a maze of interlocked motifs that, in the short time at his disposal , he could not come to any definite conclusion . After these introductory remarks, a very lively debate developed which crystalized into the following suggestions and queries: 1.Distinguish between major and minor motifs (secondary and tertiary ). 2.Classify and index motifs. 3.Use recognized labels and categories already devised. Establish nomenclature. Use Thompson numbers plus special sigla for comedia. A. Do motifs, particularly minor ones, have a bearing on questions of authorship and chronology? Do dramatists have their pet motifs? Always ? During certain periods only? 5.Methodology: Get started, even if arbitrarily at first. Tackle something not so big in order to develop a method. 6.Result of discussion: Discuss Nomenclature next year. Suggest specific themes for investigations and publish your suggestions in the Bulletin, as a basis for the 195 3 discussion. These were the major points. In the course of the discussion some plays and themes were briefly mentioned. [Secretary's remark: From my notes it would seem that the terms "motif" and "theme" were used indiscriminately. The use of these two terms ought to be clarified.] Fuenteovejuna is a chronical play with minor themes. They arc important as fillers. La moza del cántaro was analyzed as a composite of motifs. The Fall-of-the-Prince theme runs into the theme of the happy villager. In Lope the beatus tile theme is found combined with court intrigue . The el mundo al revés theme was mentioned as well as that of the sovereign's love and renunciation. The omission of motifs can also be significant; cf. Monroy y Suva's treatment of Fuenteovejuna. A detailed analysis of treatment of themes can establish source relationship (cf. Lope and Solórzano) and chronology (Montalbán). Profit from Shakespeare research which ought to have explored this problem. A Current Bibliography Of Foreign Publications Dealing With The Comedia Compiled by Jack H.
