Resumo

It is possible from in vivo observation and experimentation to select specific areas in the frog retrolingual membrane with special anatomical and physiological characteristics that typify precapillary sphincters. Histochemical and fine structural studies have shown that these areas are more densely innervated than are the adjacent parent arterioles. Electron micrographic sections have further disclosed a unique structure, which we have termed a triad, that characterizes these areas. The structure consists of a nucleus of an endothelial cell backed by a nucleus of a smooth muscle cell and associated nerve fibers.
