Abstract The infrared spectra of stereoregular poly n ‐butyl,‐isobutyl,‐ sec ‐butyl, and ‐ tert ‐butyl acrylates has been examined in the range from 3500 to 700 cm −1 . Poly( n ‐butyl acrylate) prepared by an anionic catalyst was found to show only diffused rings in its X‐ray photograph taken at room temperature, but the infrared spectrum of the polymer differs clearly from that of the authentic amorphous polymer. The poly(acrylic acid) obtained by hydrolysis of the n ‐butyl acrylate polymer exhibited discrete DEBYE‐SCHERRER'S rings in its X‐ray photograph. With the aid of X‐ray analysis, these crystalline or stereoregular poly‐butyl acrylates has been found to be isotactic, whose polymer chains has a three‐fold screw‐axis in the crystalline state. The infrared spectrum of the stereoregular poly‐ n ‐butyl acrylate has been found to contains no crystallization sensitive bands, which are ascribed to intermolecular interactions, as expected from the above results. Frequency shifts were observed in the various modes concerned with n ‐butyl, isobutyl, sec ‐butyl and tert ‐butyl groups.
