ResumoDiscrete metal clusters in quasi-solid solution are present in amorphous sulfides of the transition metals in the intermediate oxidation states. A “chemical” possibility for their characterization is cyanolysis. In this way the title compound 1 was “extruded” from amorphous Re2S7, which is built up of tetranuclear clusters. The Re Re cluster arises through oxidation of the hypothetical “intermediate” [Re4(μ3S)2(μ2S)4(CN)10]8−.
