Abstract The 13 C NMR chemical shifts of nitriles and nitro compounds derived from nineteen aliphatic and seven aromatic systems have been recorded and assigned. The shifts are compared with those of the hydrocarbons to give the substituent effects of the CN and NO 2 groups.
