ResumoThe effective index that appears in the WKB characteristic equation for a planar waveguide is interpreted as a continuous function of the mode order, which is treated as a real number instead of an integer. Based on this concept, a simple and efficient algorithm is devised to construct this effective-index function and determine the mode indices from it. The use of the effective-index function to synthesize refractive-index profile is discussed and demonstrated with numerical examples.
