ResumoReverse spin crossover (RSCO), the reversible spin transition from the high- to the low-spin state upon heating, was observed in [Co(Cn-terpy)2](BF4)2 (Cn-terpy=terpyridine) equipped with a long alkoxy chain (AC) of n=14 or 16 methylene units (see picture). The wide thermal hysteresis of the RSCO around room temperature could allow such compounds to be used as molecular switches.
