Für eine Reihe von kleinen bis mittelgroßen Transportmolekülen wie Valinomycin und Gramicidin A liegen heute ausführliche strukturelle und kinetische Daten vor; in diesen Fällen ist es möglich, die Transportfunktion auf der Basis der Molekülstruktur zu verstehen.
