Resumo

When pulmonary embolism (PE) is suspected, the diagnosis must be confirmed or excluded by further testing because PE is only present in about one third of those in whom it is suspected.1 Before the introduction of pulmonary angiography, the only way to confirm or exclude the diagnosis of pulmonary embolism during life was to perform pulmonary embolectomy. The development of pulmonary angiography with injection into the pulmonary artery in the 1960s2-4 permitted an accurate diagnosis of pulmonary embolism, and pulmonary angiography became the gold standard for the diagnosis of PE.
