ResumoSome recent theories of the incest taboo are critically examined. Certain theoretical positions are then examined in the light of information on 425 published cases of incest behavior. Five distinct types of incest emerge: 1) functional; 2) accidental or disorganized; 3) pathological; 4) object fixation; and 5) psychopathic. The functional type is discussed at some length, since it appears to show that the taboo on incest is not universal. The implications of the findings for the understanding and treatment of incest behavior are discussed
