Resumo

Abstract The application of recent expressions for estimating unperturbed dimensions from viscosity‐molecular weight data in good solvents is discussed. These relationships give satisfactory results for cellulose and derivatives in the solvent cadoxen. The evidence showing that these molecules have similar backbone flexibilities to those of typical synthetic polymers is reviewed. The origin(s) of the large solvent effect on the configuration in water is at present unclear, and it is apparent that current definitions of such effects are inadequate.
