Resumo

One hundred eighty-one oral contraceptive patients were matched to 181 Dalkon Shield patients by age, race, parity, and county in the family planning clinics of three Maryland counties. The continuation rate for Shield patients was 69.9 percent at 12 months as opposed to 55.4 percent for the pill patients. Fourteen of the pill patients became pregnant unintentionally as opposed to four of the Shield patients. Two hypotheses for the difference in continuation are offered. Patients wanting a temporary contraceptive method for purposes of child spacing may select orals; patients wanting a more permanent method to limit family size may select the IUD. Alternatively, the greater inconvenience of pills may be responsible for the lower continuation rate with that method.
