Resumen: La produccion cultural latina en los Estados Unidos ha alcanzado una significativa importancia en los ultimos veinticinco anos. Sin embargo, la interaccion entre ciudad e individuo ha sido poco estudiada en dicho corpus. Esta investigacion pretende contribuir a la exploracion de esta problematica, analizando el entorno urbano presente en Los Reyes del Mambo cantan canciones de amor de Oscar Hijuelos. Se propone que New York City es leida en este texto como una ciudad traducida, en terminos de Wirth-Nesher. En torno a esta hipotesis, se articula el analisis de la identidad latina en base a una estructura de tipo celular, discutiendo las practicas culturales que confirman su nucleo: Religion, Familia e Idioma. Tambien se estudian sus interacciones y funcionamiento como mecanismos de la ciudad traducida presentada por Hijuelos. However, the interaction between city and individual into this corpus has been scarcely studied. The present research attempts to contribute to the exploration of this quandary, analyzing the urban environment portrayed in The Mambo Kings Play Songs ofLove by Oscar Hijuelos. According to Wirth-Nesher, in this novel New York City is read as a translated city. Toward this hypothesis, an analysis of Latino identity as a cellular entity is articulated that follows the cultural practices at the core of it: religion, family, and language. Their interaction and role as mechanisms of the translated city drawn by Hijuelos are also studied.
