ResumoThe case of the /ndigo, or Lear's Macaw, Anodomynchus #eari, is uni-_que in South American ornith%gy.The species, although described more than 100 years ago, was known on/y through very few living specimens, which entered occas/onal/y the bird trade, without any indication of their origins.1t was presumed "probab/y some part of Brazil" (Sa/vadori, 1891).The /ast specu/ation was that it was unlike/y, though not impossib/e, that the /ndigo Macaw might not be an independent specles, but rather, a hybrid between the two other wel/ known b/ue macaws, Anodorlrynchus hyaclnthinutl and A_ glaucus (Voous, 1965) .Since Pinto (1950) had lound a tame specimen 01 the Indigo Macaw living on a larm in Pernambuco , it was clear that the species must come Irom Northeastern Brazil.Alter several Iruitless efforts since 1964, we were able in 1978 to localize A ... ui in the Raso da Catarina, Bahia (it was indeed the discovery 01 the home 01 the species, not a "rediscovery" , as was sometimes commented in the literature) The Indigo Macaw sleeps and nests in the much eroded canyons wh ich cut a plateau , completely covered by dense "caatinga" (the typical vegetation 01 the hottest and dryest areas 01 the Northeast 01 Brazil) .The Raso da Catarina is a region without settlements and without roads The area is among the least known regions 01 Brazii The Indigo Macaw is the only macaw in the region .Without any doubt it is restricted (endemic) to that area, although lormerly its distribution was a iittie more extended, reaching probably the São Francisco river. There are possibly some hundreds 01 specimens lelt, living in severai colonies.A pari 01 these colonies are 10caledin a corner 01 the Estação Ecológica do Raso da Catarina, lounded by the Secretaria Especial do Meio Ambiente (SEMA) in 1976, without knowing about the existence 01 the rare macaw in that area .There are efforts to amplily the reserve on the side where the macaws are living .There is a great worry about the conservation 01 the species and its habitaI.The Indigo Macaw is a geographic ' representative 01 the Glaucous macaw, Anodorhynchus glaucus, a southern species, which is on the verge 01 extinction .The Glaucous Macaw is morphologically very similar to the Indigo, which is a little blgger. The Hyacinthine Macaw, A_ hyacinthinus.is' a very differenl representativ e of the group .
