ResumoAbstract As its contribution to the 1960–64 clinical trial of the TNM Classification of breast cancer, The Ontario Cancer Treatment and Research Foundation reviewed in detail the distribution and 5‐year survival of 1,846 female patients classified according to TNM criteria. While further consideration of some aspects is required (for example, differentiation between skin infiltration and skin ulceration in T3, and the possible reallocation of certain T4 and N3 categories in stage IV), the UICC criteria in general appeared reasonably homogeneous within T and N categories, and sufficiently distinctive between categories. Summary tables showing statistically significant findings are given; basic tables for comparison or pooling with other series are available on request. The Ontario experience is strongly in favour of the general principles of the classification.
