ResumoThe Third International Group Meeting for the Study of Rehabilitation of the Upper Extremity in patients with cervical spinal cord injury (tetraplegia) was convened at Goteborg, Sweden, May 14 to 16, 1988. The hosts were A-G Dahllof, MD, PhD, A. Ejeskar, MD, PhD, and K Moberg, MD, PhD. The number of attendees was 80, doubled since the meeting before and now from 13 countries. The 3-day meeting was arranged so that for 2 days papers were presented and the contents were debated. One day was devoted to the examination of many patients who had had operations. The participants were able to observe results of various combinations of reconstructive surgery and to see objective measurements to compare preoperative and postoperative performance. The most useful part of this exercise was the patient interview. Many patients traveled from distant loctions so that the participants could see long follow-up, up to 17 years. As compared with the first two meetings at which many new concepts and new operations were presented, this meeting was characterized' by an emphasis on refinements of patient selection, established surgical techniques, and postoperative rehabilitation. Classification. The international classification for tetraplegia upper extremity was modified at Giens in 1984. The participants agreed that no modifications of the classification was now necessary.
