ResumoHybrid molecular orbital/molecular mechanics calculations are used to determine the origin of the "anti-lock-and-key" behavior in asymmetric catalytic hydrogenation. The computations provide a simple model to explain this behavior (see scheme), and agree with all relevant empirical data.
