Esta investigacion sur ge con un afan prospectivo sobre lo que las personas entienden por Desarrollo Sostenible con el objetivo de conocer cuales son las dimensiones que subyacen al concepto y ver en que medida estas son moduladas tanto por la ideologia politica como por la forma de relacionarse con la Naturaleza. Para ello se hace un analisis de contenido de 132 definiciones de Desarrollo Sostenible. En ellas se observan 10 dimensiones entre las que destacan «desarrollo» y «la Naturaleza y medio ambiente». En las entrevistadas, se detecta una perdida de contenidos con respecto a la definicion de la Comision Mundial del Medio Ambiente y del Desarrollo (CMMAD), lo que sugiere que existen difi cultades a la hora de precisar en el proceso de comunicacion, que se entiende por este concepto. La posicion ante la Naturaleza modula la forma de entender este concepto, no asi la ideologia politica que se atribuyen las participantes. Reviewing the concept of sustainable development in social discourse. This study originated as an in vestigation into what people mean by Sustainable Development. It attempted to discover the dimen sions underlying the concept and to find out how these are modified by political beliefs or by ways of relating to nature. To achieve this aim, a content analysis was carried out to analyse 132 definitions of Sustainable Development. Within these definitions, 10 dimensions were observed, among which «development» and «nature and the environment» stood out. The study showed that there was a loss of elements among the interviewees with regard to the WCED definition. This suggests that there are communication problems, which affect the expression of what exactly is meant by the concept. Atti tudes towards nature af fect the way in which this concept is understood, and not the political beliefs of the participants.
