Resumo

The differential diagnosis of abdominal pain is a common but challenging clinical problem. Abdominal pain is a frequent cause of disability and absence from work and is the most common reason that a patient will seek consultatory services from a gastroenterologist. 1 Harvey RF Salih SY Read AE. Organic and functional disorders in 2000 gastroenterology outpatients. Lancet. 1983; 1: 632-634 Abstract PubMed Scopus (307) Google Scholar The perception of pain is purely subjective and is heavily influenced by psychosocial aspects. Furthermore, there is significant individual variability on the subjective experience of pain because of pathophysiologic and neuroanatomic influences. The clinician therefore must consider neuroanatomic, neurophysiologic, pathophysiologic, and psychosocial factors in the evaluation of abdominal pain.
