ResumoAs interest and demand in aesthetics and cosmetic enhancement continue to burgeon, a new textbook on the subject is welcome, particularly one that fills a void. Dr Draelos's textbook certainly achieves this. Preceding texts on cosmetic dermatology have been limited to shorter, more focused works or larger, volume-based series. Broad subject matter, from camouflaging makeup to liposuction, is comprehensively covered in this single textbook. Information provided on cosmeceuticals and personal care products, to which a large portion of the text is devoted, is particularly inclusive and original. As dermatologists, our patients expect us to have expertise in the area of cosmeceuticals and personal care products, yet we often fall short in this area. Readers of this text will no doubt be equipped to informatively address questions on the topic with their patients. The textbook is divided into four well organized sections. Chapter authors come from varied backgrounds, including basic scientists, industry professionals, and dermatologists with specific expertise. The opening section, entitled “Basic Concepts,” includes information on basic skin physiology, structure, and function. Topics include skin barrier function, pigmentation, photoaging, and topical delivery systems. Section II, “Hygiene Products,” is devoted to personal care products including segments on cleansers, moisturization, sunless tanning, sunscreens, and shaving. The introduction to the shaving chapter includes an interesting outline on the history of shaving. Many chapters open similarly with historical content. The third section, entitled “Adornment,” extensively covers information on facial makeup and nail and hair cosmetics. “Antiaging” titles the final and largest section. Here, cosmeceuticals and numerous minimally invasive cosmetic procedures are addressed, encompassing botulinum toxin injection, soft tissue fillers, chemical peels, and laser and light devices, to name a few. Many chapters in this section provide sufficient detail and explanation for the novice. Each chapter in this section responsibly includes a portion on adverse reactions or complications, many additionally offering management tips. The written text is nicely supplemented with numerous tables for “at a glance” access to information. A multitude of photos have also been included, many of which show the before and after results of procedures. In summary, this text features a broad range of topics in cosmetic dermatology including novel information on personal care products and cosmeceuticals. It is an excellent educational tool for general and cosmetic dermatologists, residents, aestheticians, and other physician extenders.
