Tópico(s)Antibiotics Pharmacokinetics and Efficacy
ResumoSystemic antibiotics play a vital role in dermatology, with oral antibiotics representing approximately 20% of all outpatient prescription written by dermatologists annually. Thus, a thorough understanding of these agents is imperative for the practicing dermatologist. This chapter reviews the major classes of antibiotics frequently used in dermatology. For each antibiotic class, we will review the mechanism of action, antimicrobial activity, pharmacokinetics, major dermatologic indications, and important adverse effects, including cross-reactions and drug interactions. In addition, mechanisms of resistance are highlighted throughout the text. Finally, two special topics—treatment of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus and Clostridium difficile–associated disease—are explored.
