Abstract It analyses from the historical perspective and with the support of the social linguistics, the Spaniard mythic legacy and the answer given by the creoles during the independence process (the beginning of the XVIII century). For that purpose were chosen the writings of Antonio Leon, a Spanish cleric, and Juan Fernandez de Sotomayor, Colombian priest and bishop, in order to compare them and extract the main analysis and historiography categories, in favor or against the independence. The precedents concepts (referents) are presented in both discourses, highlighting the fusion that is made by Fernandez de Sotomayor with the illustration ideas, and the humanistic Spanish scholastics. Key Words: Discourse, American Independence, Myths, Religion, Historiography, Spanish colony, Spanish conquest.
