ResumoThe transcription factor X box-binding protein 1 (XBP1) was isolated two decades ago in a search for regulators of major histocompatibility complex (MHC) class II gene expression. Many years of research finally revealed a protein with many functions, none of them related to the MHC. This paper provided an overview of what this multifunctional transcription factor actually does.
