Resumo

A dynamic model was developed to study the growth and substrate consumption of immobilized nitrifying cells. This model system was chosen in order to study the complex immobilized cell processes. It was shown that in this system high nitrification capacities could be reached. This has been the reason to consider the possibility of using immobilized cells as a practical system as well. Besides the high capacity, the process proved to be relatively insensitive to temperature changes. Application of artificially immobilized cells in waste-water treatment is an attractive alternative in case the gel material used is stable in waste-water.
