Resumo

Comparison of geodetic measurements made in 1942 and 1970 along the Denali fault indicates no lateral slip near the Richardson Highway and little or no slip near the Alaska Railroad. This finding is consistent with recent seismic history. The measurements also indicate a nearly uniform extensional strain of about 10 to 15 ppm roughly normal to the fault over a zone at least 20 to 25 km wide. The observed strain is tentatively attributed to a relaxation of normal stress possibly associated with elastic deformation accompanying the 1964 Alaska earthquake or with incipient slippage on a previously locked segment of the fault.
