Lung development begins in early embryonic life and continues throughout the period of body growth. At birth a number of sudden changes take place. This review considers aspects of several related topics: lung morphology during devel opment, the secretion and absorption of fetal lung liquid, the initiation of breathing, the development of surfactant, and changes in the pulmonary circulation.
