Neuroscience of respiration and sleep

Lung development begins in early embryonic life and continues throughout the period of body growth. At birth a number of sudden changes take place. This review considers aspects of several related topics: lung morphology during devel opment, the secretion and absorption of fetal lung liquid, the initiation of breathing, the development of surfactant, and changes in the pulmonary circulation. For lack of space, it omits ref erence to lung mechanics and gas exchange during the period of postnatal growth. Although the whole subject of lung development has not been
