ResumoThe 50th Annual Meeting of The Society of Thoracic Surgeons was held at the Orlando World Center Marriott in Orlando, Florida, January 25–29, 2014. Approximately 4,500 attended, including surgeons, allied health care professionals, exhibitors, and others. Attendees of the STS Annual Meeting had the opportunity to participate in a variety of educational sessions, including Parallel Surgical Symposia, Early Riser Sessions, Surgical Motion Picture Matinees, and STS University. The Monday morning General Session featured three J. Maxwell Chamberlain Memorial Papers: Adult Cardiac Surgery—“Safety Implications of Robotic Surgery: Analysis of Recalls and Adverse Event Reports of da Vinci Surgical Systems”; General Thoracic Surgery—“A Comparative, Propensity-Matched Analysis of Wedge Resection and Stereotactic Body Radiation Therapy for Early Stage Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer (NSCLC)”; and Congenital Heart Surgery—“Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor and Superoxide Dismutase Gene Variants Have an Additive Adverse Effect on Covariate-Adjusted Transplant-Free Survival After Surgery for Isolated Congenital Heart Disease.” These honored papers were followed by three Richard E. Clark Papers, selected for their research utilizing data from the STS National Database. The presentations were Adult Cardiac Surgery—“The Association of Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement (TAVR) Availability, Surgical Aortic Valve Replacement Case Volume, and In-Hospital Mortality in the United States. A Report From the STS Adult Cardiac Surgery Database and the STS/ACC TVT Registry”; General Thoracic Surgery—“Wedge Resection Reduces the Incidence of Major Morbidity by Nearly 50% as Compared to Lobectomy: An STS General Thoracic Surgery Database Propensity-Matched Analysis”; and Congenital Heart Surgery—“Epidemiology and Outcomes of In-Hospital Cardiac Arrest After Pediatric Cardiac Surgery: An Analysis of the STS Congenital Heart Surgery Database.” In the General Session on Tuesday afternoon, three hot topics were discussed: Adult Cardiac Surgery—“Impact of Pump Status and Conduit Choice in Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting: A 15-Year Follow-up of 2,012 Propensity-Matched Patients”; General Thoracic Surgery—“Detection of Early Lung Cancer Using Exhaled Breath”; and Congenital Heart Surgery—“Pediatric Recipient Survival Beyond 15 Post-Heart Transplant Years: A Single Center Experience.” Of particular note were four highly motivational presentations: the Presidential Address, Thomas B. Ferguson Lecture, Lillehei Lecture, and Ethics Debate. In his Presidential Address, “Take It to the Limit,” Douglas E. Wood, MD, highlighted how cardiothoracic surgeons, STS Founder Members, and the Society have pushed the profession to the limit. Dr Wood urged his colleagues to embrace women in the specialty and demonstrate a selfless leadership style. The Thomas B. Ferguson Lecture was given by Bassem Youssef, MD, an Egyptian cardiothoracic surgeon who became a popular television talk show host in his country and was named by Time Magazine as one of the 100 most influential people in the world in 2013. Dr Youssef provided insight on his career transition and explained how he used his skills as a surgeon to navigate the obstacles he faces as a political satirist in an embattled country. The C. Walton Lillehei Lecture was presented by Shaf H. Keshavjee, MD, Director of the Toronto Lung Transplant Program at the University of Toronto. Dr Keshavjee's presentation, “The Future of Transplantation: Personalized Medicine for the Organ,” focused on ways to improve the quality, safety, and outcomes of transplantation. In the Ethics Debate, “Another Surgeon's Error—Must You Tell the Patient?,” two experts gave opposing answers to this dilemma and then engaged with audience members in the debate. The Annual Meeting also featured collaborative educational efforts with other professional medical organizations, including the American Association for Thoracic Surgery (STS/AATS Tech-Con 2014 and the STS/AATS Critical Care Symposium); the Society of Cardiovascular Anesthesiologists (STS/SCA: The Mitral Valve—Echo Anatomy for Surgical Decision Making); American College of Chest Physicians (STS/ACCP Primer on Advanced and Therapeutic Bronchoscopy: Theory and Hands-On Session); the American College of Cardiology (ACC @ STS); the Joint Council on Thoracic Surgery Education (Implementation of a Surgical Curriculum in Cardiothoracic Surgery); the European Association for CardioThoracic Surgery (STS/EACTS: Repair of Type A Aortic Dissection); and the Society for Vascular Surgery (SVS @ STS). STS University wrapped up the STS 50th Annual Meeting. Approximately 600 people registered for 10 sessions. This year's sessions ranged from a hands-on course on valve-sparing aortic root replacement to robotic simulation. STS University provided an opportunity for registrants to learn the latest cardiothoracic surgery techniques through hands-on procedural education taught by world-renowned instructors. Once again, the Society is offering Annual Meeting Online products so that physicians can experience the dynamic educational offerings and earn Continuing Medical Education credit from the comfort of their home or office. The STS 50th Annual Meeting Online includes the majority of sessions from the live conference, including the surgical symposia, general sessions, parallel surgical forums, surgical motion pictures, and ethics debate. STS/AATS Tech-Con 2014 Online includes all of the educational tracks offered in Orlando during Tech-Con. Up to 112.75 CME credits are available when both products are purchased. These activities will be available for CME credit until January 31, 2015. For more information, visit www.sts.org/amonline. The success of the STS 50th Annual Meeting was due in large part to the exemplary commitment of the Workforce on Annual Meeting under the leadership of Thomas K. Varghese, Jr, MD (Workforce Chair), Robert J. Cerfolio, MD (STS University Task Force Chair), Ralph A. Mosca, MD (Surgical Symposia Task Force Co-Chair), Richard I. Whyte, MD (Surgical Symposia Task Force Co-Chair), Shanda H. Blackmon, MD (Tech-Con Task Force Co-Chair), and Jonathan M. Philpott, MD (Tech-Con Task Force Co-Chair). Before the STS 50th Annual Meeting, STS/AATS Tech-Con 2014 welcomed about 1,000 attendees and exhibitors. The program encompassed new technologies and emerging trends. The cardiac and thoracic tracks covered percutaneous valve technology for repair and replacement, innovations in 3D, next-generation devices for durable mechanical circulatory support, and new devices for esophageal disease. These tracks also included invited lectures, as well as many debates on topics such as “Choice of Valve Therapy for Medium-Risk Patients” and “TEVAR for Chronic Type B Dissection vs Descending Thoracic Aorta/Thoracic Aortic Aneurysm.” New STS officers and directors were elected during the Annual Membership (Business) Meeting on Monday, January 27. David A. Fullerton, MD, was elected STS President for 2014–2015. Additionally, Mark S. Allen, MD, was elected First Vice President, and Joseph E. Bavaria, MD, was elected Second Vice President. In view of Dr Bavaria's election, Bryan F. Meyers, MD, was elected to fill the remainder of Dr Bavaria's term as Director-at-Large. The position of Public Director had been created in 2013 and Tony Coelho, a former US Congressman from California, was elected to fill it. The following were also elected by the STS voting membership at the Annual Meeting: International Director A. Pieter Kappetein, MD, PhD, and Canadian Director Sean C. Grondin, MD. Complete rosters of the STS Board of Directors, Standing Committees, Council Operating Boards, Workforces, Annual Meeting Task Forces, and The Annals Editorial Board follow this report. The Society extends its appreciation to retiring STS officers, directors, committee members, and workforce members for their dedicated service. STS voting members elected 107 Active Members and 114 International Members this year. During 2013, 85 Candidate Members, 75 Associate Members, and 57 Pre-Candidate Members were also admitted as part of the rolling admissions process. The Society now has more than 6,700 members. STS would like to thank the many member volunteers and their supportive families for their commitment to the specialty, as well as for the hard work and long hours they put in to develop and implement this highly successful meeting. The STS 51st Annual Meeting will be held January 24–28, 2015, in San Diego, California. David A. Fullerton, Aurora, CO Mark S. Allen, Rochester, MN Joseph E. Bavaria, Philadelphia, PA Keith S.
