Resumo

The brilliantly written Viagens na Minha Terra, first published in book form in 1846, is among the most notable productions of Portuguese literature in the nineteenth century and is still firmly established in the affections of the Portuguese reading public. “Garrett da minha alma!”, exclaims the poet Antonio Nobre in his poem entitled Viagens na Minha Terra, and he was not speaking only for the so-called “Neo-Garrettian” generation of 1890–1910. Nevertheless, there have been a few discordant voices, among them that of the distinguished essayist Antonio Sergio, who scorns the “doce farinha de Nestle das Viagens na Minha Terra.
