Resumo

Skin plays an essential role as a protective barrier against irradiation of ultraviolet (UV) including UVA and UVB. Both UVA and UVB can cause skin damages and photoaging [ [1] Kligman L.H. Akin F.J. Kligman A.M. The contributions of UVA and UVB to connective tissue damage in hairless mice. J Invest. Dermatol. 1985; 84: 272-276 Crossref PubMed Scopus (249) Google Scholar ]. Wrinkle formation is a characteristics of photoaging and is closely related to collagen fibrils and gelatin fibers [ [2] Pandel R. Poljsak B. Godic A. Dahmane R. Skin photoaging and the role of antioxidants in its prevention. ISRN Dermatol. 2013; 2013: 930164 Crossref PubMed Google Scholar ]. Wrinkle formation is attributed to reduced skin elasticity and degeneration of the extracellular matrix (ECM) which includes fibrous proteins such as elastic fiber, collagen, and glycosaminoglycans produced by fibroblasts in the dermis [ [2] Pandel R. Poljsak B. Godic A. Dahmane R. Skin photoaging and the role of antioxidants in its prevention. ISRN Dermatol. 2013; 2013: 930164 Crossref PubMed Google Scholar ].
